Our first look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is here!
Also, if you’re expecting a “many bothans died” joke, because apparently everyone has to do it, you’re not getting one. You know why? DIFFERENT BLOODY DEATH STAR MATE.
So, there it is. Prior to this trailer we knew that Rogue One would tell the story of how the plans of the original Death Star fell into the hands of the Rebels. It turned out to be pretty useful too, as it allowed the Rebels to find the weakness that Luke exploited to destroy it at the end of A New Hope. What I love about this trailer is that it doesn’t really give us any more information than that – just how a trailer should be (Ahem DC/ Warner Bros Ahem). So here’s my thoughts on it!
That Star Wars feel
J.J. Abrams did a great job of restoring the aesthetic to the Star Wars universe and it looks like more of the same here. This is a universe that looks lived in and I love it. Plus AT-ATs!
First look at Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso
Jyn, as we now know her by, appears to be in Rebel custody here and we get told that she’s a bit of a trouble maker. I’m guessing she’s stolen something off the Rebellion. She was orphaned at 15 and is presumably one of those ‘I did what I did to survive’ type characters when she’d picked up by the Rebels. By the looks of it, she’s been given a chance to redeem her self by going undercover on the Death Star to help steal the plans.
Also, is this base looks a lot like it could be on Yavin 4, the location of the Rebel Alliance headquarters in Episode IV.
Mon Mothma is back! She’s the leader of the Rebel Alliance in the Return of the Jedi. She’s mainly famous for delivering the famous bothans line. She looks like she’s putting her faith in Jyn to obtain the Death Star plans. I wonder why? Maybe Jyn has a history in theft from her time on the streets and Mon Mothma recognises that this could be an asset? Maybe…Anyway, apparently this is the actress who played Mon Mothma in a scene from Revenge of the Sith but her scenes were cut out. So it’s nice that she’s got another shot at it.
A first look at some new characters
Here’s Diego Luna as maybe a rebel captain? He’s allowed to sit in on this conversation so he must have some importance. We later see him in the trailer with Jyn in a scene which looks like a battle-prep scene. Looks like he might have a mentor relationship with Jyn within the Rebellion. I’m guessing he’s tasked with looking out for Jyn.
We’ve also been given a look at the characters played by Forest Whitaker and Donnie Yen (bottom left and right respectively). Whitaker looks to be playing an aged warrior who could be an Obi-Wan -esque guide for Jyn’s bunch of Rebels. Yen, a martial arts expert, looks to be playing, yes, a martial arts expert demonstrated by how he takes down this stormtrooper with ease. I’m really looking forward to seeing these characters from clearly very different backgrounds unite to steal the Death Star plans. I’ve really no idea how these characters will team up but here they are in this image released a while ago by Disney, so it must happen right?
A new droid (think of all the toys!)
Looks like there’ll be the compulsory droid companion in this film. Here he/she is running behind Jyn.
This might be Alan Tudyk, as we know he is playing a mo-cap character. Or it might not be, it could be be a random droid.
He sure looks pretty evil. He looks like he’s very high up in the Empire and he’s probably going to be the big bad. That is unless a certain wheezy gentleman appears (and he might). But I’m guessing that even if he does appear, Mendelsohn will still be our main antagonist here. There’s rumours he’s playing a character inspired by Grand Admiral Thrawn, who’s a character from the Star Wars extended universe, which is no longer canon. Either way he looks pretty badass. There’s a couple of really cool shots in the trailer of him looking very evil.
Who’s that guy in the hood?
Palpatine? Maybe? They’re certainly his guards in red in the background, but it looks as though he’s bowing to something which certainly isn’t very Palpatine-y. It’s almost definitely not Vader as I’ve seen a few people speculate. Vader doesn’t wear hoods. Alternatively, could be Mendelsohn in his evening outfit or it could be someone new entirely.
I’d be surprised if Palpatine isn’t somewhere in this scene though.
Jyn goes undercover!
Looks like our hero is going undercover in the Death Star then, she’s got all the Death Star gear on anyway. I’m looking forward to seeing a heist/spy type Star Wars. This could be a really interesting sub-genre for Star Wars to branch out into.
So that’s all very exciting!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story lands 16th December 2016 here in the UK.
