The Batman has its director!

Matt Reeves (Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) is officially on board to direct and produce The Batman.

Oh no, he’s dropped out…

Oh wait, no he’s back again!

He’s definitely back. One hundred percent. It’s certain.

Or at least as certain as Warner Bros and DC can manage in these days of directorial musical chairs.

As a huge fan of Batman and Ben Affleck I was pretty gutted when he stepped down as director and for me, I thought that spelt bad news for this whole WB/ DC…thing. Affleck said he’d direct The Batman only when he had a script he was happy with so when he stepped down it reeked of WB pushing ahead with production without a proper script – they have history of this.

While the hiring of Reeves doesn’t necessarily allay these fears it is, at least, a welcome addition to the DCEU. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is probably one of the most underrated blockbusters of our time. It’s a phenomenal achievement of blending great story telling and spectacle and one that deserves more recognition.

Maybe we’ll never know the true reason Affleck stepped down. Maybe it had nothing to do with WB/DC. Maybe it was too much pressure.

At least we’ve got a great substitute. Let’s hope that Reeves isn’t onboard as just a yes man.
